FPCCI Poll Showdown: BMP and BMG strike 10-year deal
KARACHI (TKP Report): Pakistan’s business politics is witnessing a major realignment ahead of the upcoming elections of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), as the Businessmen Panel (BMP) and Businessmen Group (BMG) have moved towards a joint electoral alliance to challenge the United Business Group (UBG).
According to sources, senior leaders of both groups held an extensive meeting in Karachi that continued for several hours, focusing on a proposed ten-year agreement and a joint strategy for the upcoming FPCCI elections.
The most significant development was the exchange of documents relating to the proposed ten-year agreement, with representatives from both sides discussing its clauses and the framework for future political and electoral cooperation.
Sources said BMG has also decided to contest the FPCCI elections under a new name, signalling a potential restructuring of the business group’s electoral identity as part of its strategy to challenge UBG.
Another major development was the decision to field Zubair Motiwala as a presidential candidate for the upcoming FPCCI elections. Sources said the decision had been reached during a meeting of five senior business leaders at the PHMA House two days earlier.
Following that meeting, consultations, meetings and telephone contacts continued throughout Wednesday, paving the way for a formal announcement at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Thursday.
The demand for Sindh, particularly Karachi, to get its turn in the FPCCI presidency also emerged as a central factor behind the evolving political alignment. Sources said the argument that it was now Sindh’s turn to lead the country’s apex trade body played an important role in driving the negotiations.
Meanwhile, both groups have also agreed to explore the inclusion of the Businessmen Panel Progressive (BMPP) in the proposed alliance. A delegation comprising BMP and BMG leaders is expected to meet BMPP leadership within the next 24 hours to discuss its possible participation.
The meeting was attended by prominent BMP leaders, including Anjum Nisar, Senator Ghulam Ali, Zakaria Usman, Nasir Hayat Magoon and Usman Ghani.
Representing BMG were Zubair Motiwala, Jawed Bilwani, Rehan Hanif, and former KCCI presidents, among other business leaders.
The proposed ten-year agreement, Zubair Motiwala’s expected candidacy and the possible expansion of the alliance could significantly reshape the electoral landscape of FPCCI.
The key question now is whether this emerging coalition can consolidate Karachi’s business leadership and pose a serious challenge to UBG especially SM Tanveer in the forthcoming elections.
