Sri Lankan Pineapples Debut in Pakistan, Opening New Trade Chapter

Sri Lankan pineapples made their official entry into Pakistan on Sunday with a launch event in Karachi, signaling the start of commercial trade and a fresh push to strengthen Pak-Sri Lanka economic ties.

Sri Lanka’s Consul General Sanjeeva Pattiwala attended the ceremony and addressed participants, calling for deeper trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. British Deputy High Commissioner Tom Burge was also present and engaged in talks on mutual interests and bilateral trade opportunities.

The event was hosted by noted businessman Sahal Jan. He spoke about bringing Sri Lankan pineapples to Karachi and announced plans for more initiatives to promote the fruit locally.

Also present was Aslam Pakhali, Chairman of the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetables Association. He hailed the import of high-quality Sri Lankan produce and urged both sides to expand trade links, noting significant potential for collaboration in the fruits and vegetables sector.

Syed Aman Shah, among other speakers, said the arrival of Sri Lankan pineapples would give Pakistani consumers access to new, quality fruit varieties and open up more avenues for business cooperation.

Diplomats, business leaders and civil society members attended the ceremony. Participants described the pineapple import as a positive step toward enhancing Pakistan-Sri Lanka friendship and boosting bilateral trade.
