Japan Launches 2026 Film Festival in Karachi
– Japan Fest 2026 set for November
Karachi: The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi opened the “Japanese Film Festival 2026” on Friday at the Arts Council of Pakistan. The event was held in partnership with the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association, Sindh and the Arts Council of Pakistan.
The festival began with a screening of the Japanese animated feature ‘Children of the Sea.’ The story centers on a solitary teenage girl who develops a deep connection with two brothers raised by the ocean, unlocking a mysterious telepathic link to the sea.
A total of six Japanese films will be showcased this year, spanning multiple genres to give Karachi viewers a glimpse of modern Japanese cinema. Screenings are scheduled throughout September at various venues across the city.
Consul General Hattori Masaru welcomed the large audience and spoke about the role of film in cultural diplomacy.
“I truly hope that this film festival brings you meaningful encounters, lasting memories, and maybe even a fresh perspective or two,” he said.
He added that the festival, organized annually by the Japanese Consulate and the Japan Foundation, seeks to promote Japanese culture and build stronger people-to-people ties between Japan and Pakistan.
The Consul General also revealed that Japan Fest 2026 will take place in November. The popular cultural event will feature Japanese cuisine, live music, traditional performances, cosplay, and exhibitions, and is expected to attract thousands of visitors in Karachi.
Guest of honor Shahzeen Khan, an animator from ‘The Glassworker’, credited Japanese anime and Consulate-supported cultural programs for inspiring her career. She spoke about her work with pop-culture collective Shonen Infinity and praised initiatives like Geek Haven for supporting Pakistan’s creative community.
“The Consulate’s continued support is a source of inspiration for the next generation of artists and storytellers in Pakistan,” she said.
With the Film Festival in September and Japan Fest in November, Japan is reinforcing its commitment to cultural exchange with Pakistan through cinema, art, and public engagement.
