Mayor directs KW&SC for citywide monsoon readiness
KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) has placed its entire operational network on high alert following the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s forecast of monsoon rains in the city, with emergency sewerage arrangements ordered across Karachi on the instructions of Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab.
Chief Executive Officer KW&SC Ahmed Ali Siddiqui directed all relevant officers and field staff to complete pre-monsoon preparations to ensure effective drainage and minimise disruption to daily life during the expected rainfall.
According to a KW&SC Spokesperson, zonal chief engineers, superintending engineers, executive engineers and field teams have been instructed to remain in their respective areas throughout the rain spell and continuously monitor the sewerage system. The corporation said zonal chief engineers will directly supervise operations, while executive engineers and sewerage field teams will remain on-site to ensure uninterrupted sewerage. Low-lying and flood-prone locations across the city have been identified, with additional staff, machinery and resources assigned to these areas to enable a rapid response in case of water accumulation.
KW&SC has also placed its jetting and suction machinery on emergency standby. Executive Engineer Workshop Shafqat Hussain has been assigned to oversee the timely deployment, availability and effective use of the equipment across the city to speed up drainage operations wherever required.
CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui said providing uninterrupted public services and reducing rain-related difficulties remain the corporation’s top priorities. He said all operational plans have been finalised under a comprehensive monsoon preparedness strategy, ensuring that field teams, technical staff and machinery remain ready around the clock.
He further instructed officers to closely monitor their assigned areas, respond promptly to public complaints and take immediate action in the event of any emergency. Special teams have also been constituted and deployed across different parts of the city to maintain water supply and sewerage services during the monsoon season.
The KW&SC Spokesperson appealed to residents not to remove manhole or sewer covers during rainfall, warning that the sewerage network is not designed to drain rainwater. Opening manholes, the Spokesperson said, can damage the sewerage system, disrupt sewerage operations and create serious safety risks for the public. Citizens were urged to report complaints or emergencies to the relevant KW&SC authorities to ensure a swift response.
