Kitchens affected as gas supply disrupted in Karachi

KARACHI (Staff Report): Hundreds of families faced difficulties on Monday evening after gas supply was disrupted in several areas of Karachi, leaving household kitchens shut and women unable to cook dinner.

According to details, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) suspended gas supply at 8:30 pm, one and a half hours ahead of its scheduled time of 10 pm. Residents said gas remained unavailable even during regular supply hours.

The disruption caused immediate problems in homes, as cooking could not be completed. A large number of residents, particularly women, expressed distress over the sudden suspension.

Following the disruption, a crowd was witnessed at hotels and restaurants as families turned to outside food.

The affected areas include Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Liaquatabad, Usmania Colony, F.B. Area, Shadman, Buffer Zone, North Karachi, New Karachi, Surjani Town and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, among others.

Residents said the suspension has added to their problems as LPG, the main alternative, is already being sold at a high price of Rs. 500 to 550 per kilogram in the city.

They demanded that SSGC ensure uninterrupted gas supply during designated hours and avoid unscheduled suspensions, especially during evening cooking hours.

No official statement regarding the reason for the early suspension and restoration timing had been issued till filing of this report.
