Ferry Service from Karachi Port to resume in revamped model
KARACHI (TKP): The ferry service from Karachi Port is set to resume under a new model, sources said.
Sources said after the international ferry operation was disrupted due to the war in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, authorities have decided to revamp the project.
Under the new model, the service will operate as a coastal tourism and extra-luggage facility within Pakistan. In the first phase, it will run from Karachi Port to Mubarak Village, Sunehra Beach, Charna Island and Gadani — popular tourist spots that lack proper transport facilities.
The service will not only boost marine tourism but also create jobs for local communities.
In the second phase, it will be extended to other ports of Sindh and Balochistan, including Keti Bandar and Ormara, and will offer cargo transportation to Gwadar and other coastal areas.
Local traders will be able to transport fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood to Karachi markets under the extra-luggage service, boosting business activities in coastal regions.
Sources said extension of the ferry service to Arab countries after the end of the Middle East conflict is also under consideration.
It may be recalled that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs had launched the ferry service on February 8, 2026, with a dedicated berth, visa, customs and immigration desks at Karachi Port. M/s Sea Keepers was licensed to operate the service, but operations were suspended shortly after due to the Middle East war.
