Karachi & Gwadar to drive Pak-Iran $10bn trade push

ISLAMABAD: The 10th Pakistan-Iran Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting concluded in Islamabad under the co-chairmanship of Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Dr. Mohammad Atabak.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to raise bilateral trade volume to $10 billion and to deepen economic cooperation.

Federal Minister Jam Kamal Khan said it is time to convert historic fraternal ties into a strong economic partnership. He urged early finalization of the Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement and called for removing hurdles in border logistics, customs and cargo movement.

He said joint border markets and electronic data exchange would significantly boost trade. “The private sector is ready for trade. Governments must provide a conducive and reliable business environment,” he added.

Highlighting the role of ports, Dr. Mohammad Atabak termed Pakistan Iran’s long-term strategic trade partner and expressed interest in expanding regional trade and logistics cooperation through Karachi and Gwadar ports. He said these gateways can serve as key hubs for transit and regional connectivity.

The Iranian minister also voiced hope for early completion of the FTA and said electricity trade and regional connectivity offer new economic opportunities for both countries.

Both sides reiterated resolve to promote cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity and private sector engagement, with the 10th JTC expected to deliver a practical roadmap.
