Electric machinery signals greener future for Karachi Port
KARACHI (News Desk): Karachi Port is moving towards greener and more efficient operations as Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), operated by Hutchison Ports, introduces electric machinery and technology-driven solutions to modernise cargo handling.
As part of its port modernisation initiatives, KICT is deploying Electric Reach Stackers to support cleaner and more efficient container yard operations, reducing reliance on conventional fuel-powered equipment.
According to Karachi Port Trust, the initiative is aimed at improving operational efficiency while supporting efforts to reduce emissions and the environmental footprint of port activities.
KICT has also added 27 new yard trailers to strengthen internal cargo movement, improve container flow and support vessel operations, contributing to better turnaround times and productivity.
Meanwhile, the terminal’s technology upgrades include drive-through NLC scanning, capable of processing 25 to 30 containers per hour, and digital security systems for external drivers.
The External Drivers Facial Recognition Verification System integrates biometric registration, real-time gate verification, mobile onboarding and Terminal Operating System (TOS) connectivity. Around 23,000 drivers have already been registered under the system.
These initiatives reflect KICT’s broader push towards sustainable port operations through electrification, digitalisation and improved logistics connectivity.
