Mass transit gap choking Karachi traffic, says Karachi Police Chief

KARACHI: Additional IG Sindh Azad Khan said the lack of mass transit and encroachments are key reasons behind Karachi’s traffic problems, as he announced an integrated traffic management system will be launched starting from District Central.

Addressing the Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry (FBATI), Khan acknowledged growing concerns over illegal interprovincial bus stands and rickshaw stands near industrial areas.

FBATI President Sheikh Muhammad Tehseen said the unregulated bus terminals and rickshaw stands have created new challenges for industrial operations, security and commuters. He urged relevant institutions to adopt a joint strategy for their immediate removal and relocation to ensure smooth business activity.

Azad Khan also highlighted police performance, noting crime in Karachi has dropped. He said two major kidnapping-for-ransom and extortion networks were busted, 1,300 Safe City cameras have been installed with 2,000 more planned, and an e-challan system has been introduced.
